How do we "get finished"? What are our goals at Huntington Learning Center?
Isn't it strange that all kinds of services make it obvious and easy to "get started," but rarely discussed the expected results? What happens at the end of my student's program?
End Goals: 3 Success Metrics in 4-8 mos
Everyone makes it easy for you to "get started," but let's make sure we're aligned with what success looks like and how we reach it!
Academic SKILLS at grade level
Students should perform at grade level in both reading and math
Our most successful students are often 1 - 2 grade levels ahead
While every student's situation is different, your educational goal is clearly listed out on Day 1

CONFIDENCE to try and to ask for help
Bridge learning gaps and refine strengths
Develop confidence in their own skills and abilities
Learn self advocacy skills for lifelong success
Focused on success
Develop the stamina and work ethic to improve and perfect skills one level at a time (hey, just like the way they do in video games!)
MOTIVATION to do their best!
Keys to Success
Your student is unique, and there is no one size fits all approach (we wish it was that easy!). But these are the challenges we typically see, and how we approach them.

Crossroad Students
Consistently mixed grades of As, Bs, Cs. Comments from teacher or suspicion from parents that they are very smart and capable, but underperforming. Not getting much individual attention in class because they're well-behaved, but also not excelling.
SKILLS: Improves as they fill in foundational skill gaps. Study skills are esp. critical in helping students prioritize their work and self regulate.
CONFIDENCE: Less of an issue, as they are typically capable. Be mindful of a slow but steady decrease, however, when they reach middle school and beyond. Advanced classes are more challenging and competitive.
MOTIVATION: Likely an issue, as it feels easier to coast along than to strive for better grades. Incentivize them with stronger skills and a taste for success!
Enrichment Students
School has always come so easily - what's the point of working harder and building "good study habits?" Students start to struggle when they begin competing with other talented peers in advanced classes.
SKILLS: Challenge them with materials that are more advanced than their school classes and correct poor study habits. Study skills are critical for students to become efficient and successful learners.
CONFIDENCE: Students can become overconfident because school has seemed easy so far. But be on the lookout as students encounter more challenging material and competitive classmates!
MOTIVATION: Could be an issue, as it is easier to coast than to strive for better grades. Many naturally talented students also don't recognize that they need to study smarter, not harder!
Acceleration Students
Fallen behind by more than 1 grade level due to a variety of reasons (illness, poor academic experiences, family situations, etc.).
SKILLS: Learning in class is like getting dropped in the deep end of the pool to learn to swim. Return to the level they are most confident in and work their way up.
CONFIDENCE: This is the key! Lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement to cheer on their early successes and push through the subsequent challenges.
MOTIVATION: A huge issue for students who often give up trying. This improves as students gain confidence (picking up a book on their own, more proactive in tackling assignments, ask more questions, etc.)

"…. As a pediatric occupational therapist and mother.... Huntington Learning Center in Elk Grove provides the precise skills development, inner motivation for my child, and tutoring program to fill the gaps that school misses. I researched extensively between this and Kumon .... The educational assessment is more comprehensive than school districts' IEP assessments. So they were able to accurately identify the areas ... that my child needs.... :) Skills and confidence are already improving in just the first month. Mind you, this is after having had support from the school's Learning Center for 2 years with minimal progress... "

VR, Mom of 2 boys in Elk Grove (5th and 3rd grade)
"... heading into 5th grade ... felt the weight of falling behind in school.... impacting his grades but his self-esteem. He would often come home crying because he was struggling to keep up and he was giving up on even trying with homework. I tried my best to help him but I was getting overwhelmed by his frustration and the evenings at home were becoming unbearable. Three months after starting him at Huntington, he is a different child! His teacher is proud of how well he is doing academically and he has grown in motivation and confidence. The kids now turn to him for help on schoolwork! He now wants to go to school and wants to achieve because he knows he can. There are no words to express the transformation I have seen in him. I am very grateful to the wonderful staff at the center who have reached out to boys’ teachers, kept me involved in their progress, and have been so willing to make learning a great experience for them. This was definitely money well invested and one of the best decisions made for our boys. " See full review

"...my daughter ... growing up in the age of the pandemic when schools were online, I was a nervous, anxious parent – feeling like my daughter was falling behind academically... In less than a year of being at Huntington, my daughter has excelled... She’s currently one and a half grades above her current age level. As a parent, I am ecstatic about this! My daughter is reading, writing and enjoys learning." See full review

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it usually take to complete your program?
We use the academic assessment to build an individualized program for your student based on their unique strengths and weaknesses. This program will include an estimate of total hours and a recommendation for number & length of sessions each week. On average, we see programs from 2-8 hrs per week, with a completion within 4-7 months.
Why does confidence matter?
Imagine that your work finds out you took high school French. Every day, you're tasked with reading out loud a memo in front of your colleagues at work...in French. You might have taken a few high school language courses way back when, but you'd have little to no confidence in reading it now, much less in front of a group of your peers. Will you look forward to it? Be motivated to go to work tomorrow?
Now imagine that your student feels that way about their skills at school. How would they perform? Confidence fosters motivation and resilience, and these are critical impetus for continued learning and academic success.
Is motivation that important in academics?
Just kidding! We know you wouldn't be asking this if you're reading this far down the FAQs, but obviously motivation is key.
Some warning signs to look out for with your students: dragging their feet to start their homework, drinking more water - therefore using the bathroom - more than ever while doing homework, mysterious stomach ailments when it's time for school (or schoolwork). Yes, we have heard/ seen it all!
The truth is that if you're good at something (like math!), you tend to want to do it! If you're bad at something, you tend to avoid it. 90% of motivation issues started with a lack of confidence & skill (the other 10% from a lack of challenge in school over the years).
What happens at the end of the program?
As your student progresses through the program, you'll have meetings with our directors on your student's progress and performance. We'll also have recommendations for next steps as the program draws to a close.
Some students graduate from our program and move on to other things/activities. Maybe years down the line, they'll return for some subject tutoring support in a challenging AP class or test prep for the ACT. Some of our students continue with us on a shorter "maintenance" program where emphasis is placed on refining the skills they've learned and getting support with homework.
What are typical learning goals?
Based on the assessment results, we provide you with a preliminary learning goal on Day 1: both in reading and math, with a coordinating grade level. This is our best guess based on past experiences with similar students. We will also provide you with an estimated time needed to hit those objectives. All of our learning goals are set with the S.M.A.R.T. framework.
Do you offer a guarantee to success?
We wish it were so simple! Buyer beware, just as if you heard from a medical professional that a treatment's success is 100% "guaranteed." But for families who work with us and are on time, attend consistently, and collaborate throughout the process - we like your chances for success (in fact, 94+%)!
Do you ever adjust the learning goals?
Of course! The learning goals are live, and are based on actual results and information as we have them. Is your student engaged and energized in session, or are they alway 10 minutes late and tired? These impact their learning, and therefore changes their learning goals. We will set those expectations together with our families during our check-in meetings, and reset them, as needed, as students progress and we get more information.
