Purpose and administration of each tests
STUDY SKILLS & APTITUDE: Slosson Visual Motor Performance Test
Purpose: This evaluation screens for visual perception difficulties. It also shows your child’s ability to remain organized and pay attention to detail.
Administration: We asked your child to copy several figures, three times each. We asked your child to copy as many figures as your child was able.
Slosson Oral Reading Test
Purpose: This evaluation measures a student’s sight-word ability
Administration: We asked your child to read words aloud, but not to define or spell the words. We asked your child only to say the words.
Boehm Test of Basic Concepts
Purpose: This evaluation measures mastery of basic concepts considered necessary for achievement in the first years of school and the ability to follow directions.
Administration: Your child was given a booklet containing different pictures. For each row of pictures, we asked your child a question. Your child responded by choosing a picture to answer the question.
Informal Reading Inventory – Oral and Silent Reading
Purpose: The oral evaluation determines how your child reads materials both in school and at home. The silent evaluation determines how your child reads and studies materials both in school and at home.
Administration: We asked your child to read three passages aloud, and three different passages silently . The first passage was similar to the material presented last year in school, the second on this year’s level, and the third for next year. After your child read each passage, we asked questions about what was read. For the silent reading, we kept track of the time it took your child to read each passage.
Reading Readiness Evaluation
Purpose: This evaluation assesses reading readiness skills based on letter recognition and formation, identification of colors, and other aspects of general knowledge.
Administration: We asked your child to identify and print the letters of the alphabet, to name colors, and to identify the directions of right and left. We also asked your child to answer questions of general knowledge.
Writing Sample
Purpose: This evaluation measures your child’s writing skills in the areas of grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, passage format, and style.
Administration: We asked your child to write a composition on an assigned topic.
Chall Phonetic Analysis
Purpose: This evaluation determines whether your child has mastered sound-symbol association for consonants and vowels. It indicates whether your child has the ability to put together separate sounds to form words and to spell words correctly.
Administration: Your child was asked to say various sounds, including consonants, vowels, and blends. Then, your child was asked to repeat back a sentence verbally and also to write a dictated sentence. Lastly, your child was asked to divide words into syllables.
Huntington Math Placement Exam
Purpose: This evaluation measures the math skills your child should have mastered through the current grade level in school, and allows us to pinpoint the individual needs.
Administration: We asked your child to complete the test independently within a designated amount of time.
